About the project

Steampunk Chronology is probably the first attempt to reconstruct the history and the evolution of the genre. The goal is to assemble everything that comes within contemporary definition of steampunk (or within many coexisting definitions): from modern sf, fantasy & horror set in the 19th century, through mad crossovers & pastiches, to alternate history and retro-futurism. [go to the list >>]

The Chronology is a work in permanent progress. Published on 26 August 2003, this project is still very much alive, being successively updated on a bi-weekly schedule. The number of listed titles quickly increased from original 500 to 1,500. I would like to thank Baralier, Matthias, Dave F, Dave S, Emery, Jeff, Dutch Waits, Winterwedderburn, Tomasz G, Scott, Jean-Marc, Cory, Marcus and Matt at Heliograph, Thilo, Martin, Nils, Carl & Thomas (among others) for their input and support. If you, dear reader, can supplement or verify the data, please contact me. All suggestions, comments and remarks are welcome.

Reviews:

  • "Absolutely amazing Steampunk Chronology. This wonderfully comprehensive list represents 12 languages, is in English and Polish, and categorises movies, literature, comics, games, interactive games, and audio. Highly recommended." [Kiadic Pilgrimage]

  • "An excellent Steampunk Chronology. Extra points for including some things that don't usually make any lists (Sherlock Holmes's War of the Worlds, Avram Davidson's overlooked Eszterhazy stories, and Schuiten and Peeters' Obscure Cities series, especially) and for providing sources at the bottom!" [Angry Thoat]

  • "A huge and fascinating listing of books, TV shows and movies that could, in whole or in part, be classified as 'steampunk'." [Noise Monster Productions]

  • "Somewhere in a darkened office in Poland is a server dedicated to the gothic vision of 'steampunk' - a vision of the past stirred by the future, of a pseudo-Victorian world dominated by machines that might have been. The server lists every major steampunk work produced since the mid-60s. Here can be found, book-ended by the Hollywood blockbusters, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Shanghai Knights, those lesser-known but just as highly influential steampunks from Bacchus Marsh, The Lycette Bros." [Strange Attractors]

  • "A wide-ranging bibliography of all things Steampunk, also covering non-English material." [IROSF: The Internet Review of Science Fiction]

  • "You'll find a great resource and a very European take on steampunk material. This includes foreign language material which you wouldn't otherwise encounter. Highly recommended." [Steampunk Resources]

  • "Detailed information on the steampunk genre, famous for its Steampunk Chronology." [Gothic Steam Phantastic]

  • "The site is in Polish, however a wonderful Chronology of Steampunk is in English!" [Rivets & Steam]

  • "An impressive Steampunk Chronology, from 1965's Wild Wild West to a list of upcoming works in the genre." [NAGS Society]

  • "Möglicherweise ein Anreiz, die polnische Sprache zu lernen. Allein die Grafiken treiben Steampunk-Fans die Tränen der Begeisterung in die Augen." [Greywood]
